11. Hawaii: Duke Kahanamoku (Honolulu)

Raised on the shores of Waikiki, Kahanamoku was practically amphibious. He represented the United States in swimming across multiple Olympic games, capturing five total medals (three gold) between 1912 and 1924. Beyond the pool, he is universally revered as the father of modern surfing. He traveled the globe giving swimming and surfing exhibitions, single-handedly popularizing the ancient Hawaiian sport of wave-riding on a global scale.
