41. South Dakota: Billy Mills (Pine Ridge)

Born and raised on the poverty-stricken Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Mills, an Oglala Lakota, found his calling in distance running. He earned a scholarship to Kansas before joining the U.S. Marine Corps. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Mills pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. Running the 10,000 meters against heavily favored international stars, he unleashed a shocking final sprint to win gold, remaining the only American to ever win the event.
