49. Wisconsin: Eric Heiden (Madison)
A product of Madison West High School and the University of Wisconsin, Heiden achieved the impossible on the ice. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, he won an unprecedented five individual gold medals in speed skating, sweeping every distance from the 500m sprint to the grueling 10,000m marathon. In the process, he set four Olympic records and one world record, securing what is widely considered the greatest singular performance in Olympic history.
