During the early and mid-twentieth century, high-end shoe stores frequently utilized novel devices known as pedoscopes. These machines were primitive, completely unshielded X-ray devices used to view the bones of a customer’s foot directly inside a newly purchased shoe. Once the severe, lethal medical dangers of rampant radiation exposure became clear to the scientific community, state lawmakers rapidly moved to ban the devices entirely. The state explicitly and specifically outlaws using a pedoscope to size shoes.
