Summer county fairs feature countless bizarre agricultural games, but this northern state drew a firm legislative line regarding animal welfare. Any public contest where contestants have to try to capture a greased or oiled animal is completely illegal, meaning traditional greased pig catching contests and turkey scrambles are permanently banned. The law was drafted by early animal rights advocates who successfully argued that covering an animal in thick, blinding grease and having dozens of frantic people tackle it caused severe, unnecessary psychological stress and massive physical harm to the helpless livestock.
