36. Oregon: Canned Corn Bait
Anglers and commercial fishermen are heavily regulated to protect the delicate ecosystems of local lakes and rivers. A bizarre but highly practical environmental law proclaims that it is strictly illegal to use canned corn as fishing bait. The legislative reasoning is rooted entirely in aquatic biology. Hatchery fish cannot properly digest the tough cellulose outer shell of commercial corn kernels. If a massive amount of canned corn is aggressively dumped into a waterway by fishermen, the fish will eagerly consume it, suffer severe digestive blockages, and die in massive numbers, completely devastating the local ecosystem.
