Born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. in Harlem, he became a national prodigy leading Power Memorial Academy to three straight New York City Catholic championships. He followed this by winning three consecutive NCAA titles at UCLA. In the NBA, armed with his unstoppable and elegant “skyhook” shot, Kareem won six NBA MVP awards and six NBA championships. Until LeBron James passed him, he held the NBA all-time scoring record for nearly four decades.
