37. Oregon: Steve Prefontaine (Coos Bay)

A native of the logging town of Coos Bay, “Pre” brought an aggressive, front-running, rock-star swagger to the sport of long-distance track. Competing for the University of Oregon under legendary coach Bill Bowerman, he never lost a collegiate race at 3 miles or 5,000 meters. Before his tragic death in a car accident at age 24, Prefontaine held the American record in seven different distance events and ignited the 1970s American running boom.
