40. South Carolina: Joe Frazier (Beaufort)

Growing up in a rural farming community in Beaufort, “Smokin’ Joe” built his legendary strength by pounding on a heavy bag he rigged from burlap and corn cobs. He moved north to pursue boxing, winning an Olympic gold medal in 1964. Known for his bobbing, weaving, and devastating left hook, Frazier became the undisputed heavyweight champion and secured his immortality by handing Muhammad Ali his first professional defeat in the 1971 “Fight of the Century.”
