26. North Dakota: Beer And Pretzels
Hospitality laws in this northern state once featured a very strange restriction on the distribution of classic bar snacks. An old statute explicitly dictated that beer and pretzels may not be served at the exact same time in any licensed restaurant or bar. The historical reasoning behind this law stems directly from the moral anxieties of the era immediately following the repeal of prohibition. Lawmakers wanted to actively prevent tavern owners from serving highly salted snacks that would intentionally make patrons incredibly thirsty, thereby artificially encouraging excessive binge drinking and dangerous levels of public intoxication.
