27. Nebraska: Marriage And Health
Public health regulations occasionally intersect with civil marriage laws in deeply invasive and highly controversial ways. An old state law declares that entering into a marriage contract if you have a sexually transmitted disease is strictly illegal in Nebraska. Originally, the state required mandatory medical blood tests before issuing a marriage license to aggressively enforce this exact rule. While the mandatory medical testing was eventually repealed due to privacy concerns, making the law virtually impossible to enforce today, the underlying text declaring the union legally void remains buried deep within the historical legal code.
