29. South Carolina: Pinball Age Limits
Arcade games were once viewed by conservative lawmakers as a massive threat to the moral fabric of society. An outdated law explicitly states that a citizen must be at least 18 years old in order to legally play a mechanical pinball machine. During the mid-twentieth century, before the invention of the mechanical flipper turned pinball into a game of skill, the machines were heavily associated with illegal gambling, mob activity, and juvenile delinquency. Lawmakers believed the games were designed purely to steal coins from vulnerable children. While modern arcades are completely family-friendly, the old prohibition-era statute remains a funny piece of legislative history.
